What Would Jesus Do (con't)
Before too many pages, though, we notice a haunting theme. In spite of all of their religious activity and good-sounding words they have completely missed the heart of what it means to follow Jesus. They are a modern example of the busy men in the Samaritan story who see the hurting man lying by the side of the road bleeding and unconscious from his wounds. “Poor man, something should be done for him,” they think as they cross over to the opposite side of the highway to hurry on to their next important appointment.
A few of the folks in Raymond are challenged by their own inconsistencies. “How is it that we say one thing, yet do quite another?” They begin to ask themselves a very simple question when faced with choices and challenges in their daily lives. “What would Jesus do?” It becomes a useful tool that transforms religious people who enjoy pursuing good things into godly people who hunger to allow Christ to live through them.
“I have been mistreated by someone.” How would Jesus react? “I just don’t get along with certain folks.” How would Jesus relate to them? “Some very ugly things have been said in our business sessions and church gatherings.” What would Jesus say? “People from far away places move into my community and seek out help and friendship.” What would Jesus do? “The fields are white unto harvest, but I am unwilling to step into the fields.” Where would we find Jesus? “I am critical of my brothers and sisters and don’t mind telling others how I feel.” What would Jesus think of such attitudes and words? “I see hurting people everyday, and I do hope someone helps them, but I am very busy taking care of my own needs.” What would be Jesus’ command?
To be hearers of the Word only and fail to flesh out the love of Christ by our deeds pitifully misses God’s design and purpose. All of our thoughts, words, and actions should be carefully measured by the standards the Lord has set before us. We will be pleasantly surprised by the results.
Love is always patient,
Love is always kind,
Love is never envious
Or vaunted up with pride.
Nor is she conceited,
And never is she rude,
Never does she think of self
Or ever get annoyed.
She never is resentful,
Is never glad with sin,
But always glad to side with truth,
Whene’er the truth should win.
She bears up under everything,
Believes the best in all,
There is no limit to her hope,
And never will she fall.
What would Jesus do? He would love.
