You Didn't Hear What I Thought I Said (con't)
Just because we say, broadcast, print, or publish something does not guarantee that it will communicate what we intended or garner the results we had hoped for. Communication can be very tricky. No matter how clear we think it is in our minds, it could easily miss the mark entirely. Driving down a highway or country road I read on church signs one line "mini messages" that intend to move the readers to a closer walk with God. A great number of these miss the mark. "Spend Sunday at the lake, and spend eternity in the lake of fire." Another said, "If you do not want to reap the fruits of sin stay out of the devil's orchard." "When God ordains, He sustains."
Be very careful—cute, pithy sayings may do nothing more than tickle a believer (one who already speaks the language on the sign) or confuse or offend a non-Christian (one who may not understand some of the words used, much less the meaning). If our aim is to help a non-believer consider what we have to offer, then let's be sure to offer something that will touch and communicate as Jesus did. We don't want to reinforce a "heaven-by-works" mentality or complicate the matter with legal dos and don'ts and arm chair theology. That was the job of the Pharisees.
We will do much better if we carefully consider what we are communicating before we actually say or publish it. If our aim is to reach the lost it would be far more effective to announce to them that we will be offering a seminar, study, sermon, counsel, or workshop on some personal aspect that affects them on a daily basis. Prepare for opportunities where your sign might read, "Financial Workshop this Weekend, Everyone Welcome", or "Overcoming Addictions Seminar this Saturday", or "Help for Single Moms", or "Auto Clinic Next Week", or "Dealing with Divorce", or "How to Face Depression, or Grief, or Infidelity, or whatever". You get the idea, don't you? And also keep in mind that your sign isn't just the one planted by the street in front of the church. By the interest and time you take to address life needs in those who live around you, you are displaying a huge sign. Just be sure the message is one of healing, kindness, and hope. Oh, and it's always a good idea to allow Jesus to look over what you are about to communicate, just so it mirrors who He is.
