In Memory of Rev. Seaburn Sidney Daniel (con't)

Several of us noticed that Seaburn didn't tarry long after the meeting concluded. It may be because he had an unfinished task on his mind. His wife Fran shared with us last night that as soon as they arrived home Seaburn was in the back yard to complete work on a pond that he has been building. To fill the pond he was channeling water from the gutters and downspouts of the house. The drain tile was not quite finished, and Seaburn didn't want to miss the wonderful rains that had been forecast for that night and the next day.

Fran went out some time later to check on him and found that he had finished his job. It appeared that he had sat down on the wall, and sitting there he experienced the deadly attack. He fell forward and lay on the ground.

The rescue squad transported him to Lynchburg General, but there was nothing more that could be done.

Several pastors and many friends from a number of our churches were by her side to comfort and pray with her. She shared that Seaburn had already made arrangements with Updike’s in Bedford for cremation. He asked that his ashes be scattered over the ocean.

Thank you for your prayers for Fran, the family, Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, and the Strawberry Association in the loss of our fellow servant and friend, Seaburn Daniel.

God's People Getting Together

In loving memory of Seaburn, we thought you would enjoy this article which was written by him for Mt. Hermon's November 2002 newsletter. It regards their recent homecoming, but read on for Seaburn's commentary.

The Homecoming on October 13 was a wonderful experience of God's people getting together. Many of those who were there had not seen each other for several years. It is a joy and a thrill to our hearts to see fellow Christians and enjoy good fellowship. God really blessed our hearts as we worshiped in song and prayer and proclamation. That's the way it should be when God's people gather to worship and enjoy Christian fellowship.

Homecoming makes me think of homegoing. Think of what it will be like when we attend that great Homecoming in heaven! What a wonderful time of praising God, enjoying his presence and the fellowship of our Christian family. It is so exciting that sometimes, like the apostle Paul, I can hardly wait. But, also like Paul, it is profitable for God's kingdom for me to continue preaching the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.

The purpose of our sharing the gospel through our lives, our words, and our church is to make that Homecoming even more thrilling. Think of the joy that we will have when we see someone there who was saved and is enjoying the glories of heaven because of our service to God. Do you look forward to it? I do. And I labor to help others to come to Christ to enjoy heaven too.

Isn't God good to us?

Seaburn Daniel

Rev. Seaburn Sidney Daniel

Meet Seaburn Sidney Daniel—family man, traveler, and friend:
Wearing a wide assortment of hats, on that you can depend.

An "ambassador for Christ" (Baptist lingo), but no stranger to many a man:
A speed demon say the state troopers, a map reader says his wife Fran.

"A man with a sense of humor." the words his secretary spoke.
"Even if you don't understand his brand of intelligent joke."

A man who doesn't know the word "can't" when he gets a gleam in his eye.
Known for starting Bible studies, he'll say, "It's worth a try."

Born way back in '29, from Bear Creek (Alabama) High
He graduated at sweet sixteen, then to Florence his wings to try.

A year of college and then the Air Force, in '52 taking a wife;
Forty-seven years now they've traveled—they must have married for life?!!

Meeting Fran at church, he also met God who whispered these words,
"Young man—I mean you Seaburn Daniel—for YOU I have a plan."

Impressive words they must have been, for he's been traveling since—
To Howard College (now Samford U.), and Southwestern Seminary hence.

In Forth Worth, Texas, John and Lisa made their family debut.
Seaburn was ordained in Texas while working on aircraft, too.

Then God sent a man, Ray Roberts, to point the way ahead.
Visiting family they burned up some miles; now off to Ohio they sped.

To warm-blooded, sun-loving Southerners Ohio was one icy blast,
But a tiny warm-hearted church they found.
Came son, Keith, now: the years flew so fast.

Bi-vocational, driving a bookmobile for the great state of O-hi-o.
Citizens there nearly 25 years with a short break—5 years or so.

Spent time as a Navy chaplain. seeing a lot of the world—
Italy, U.S., the Philippines. time flying by in a whirl!

While still in Ohio, the doctor said "You could use a brand new heart,
But I'll fix the one you already have and you can make a fresh start."

Stubborn Seaburn didn't want that, but God said "This is MY plan."
And that's how come he's here right now, and still a traveling man.

Lured off to old Virginia, to a different phase of the game—
Director of Missions, Strawberry 'sociation; almost 13 years he can claim.

Off on mission trips here and there, or short hops over the hill,
His love for the Lord he loves to share. Retire him—they never will!

Changing his title, no big thing for him—as simple as changing his hat.
"Maybe I'll be a full-time loafer," says he, "No problem that!"

Four grandkids back in Ohio, they'll be traveling never fear—
'Til the Lord says "Come on, Seaburn, and explore the roads up here."
